Sonnenstand

Museums are the noisy places these days. But the Corcoran's Rotunda has become a quiet, chapel-like haven with the arrival of "Sonnenstand" ("Position of the Sun"), a spiritually elevating show of photographs by contemporary German artist Ursula Schulz-Dornburg. Back in 10th-century Spain, even monasteries were too noisy for some monks, who went off to live and pray along the medieval pilgrimage route. Schulz-Dornburg has documented 10 of these long-abandoned structures, focusing on the dusty beams of light that still stream through keyhole-shaped windows, relentlessly marking off the daily rotation of the Earth and connecting their world to ours.
